Mapping the Diversity of American Women

A new report by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) studied where in the United States most young women of colour live. Turns out most young Black women live in the South, whereas young women with Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry live mostly on the West Coast (suprisingly, Texas and Minnesota are also popular).

This information is useful for policymakers. Too often people of colour are addressed as a single group with a single objective. However, people from different ethnic backgrounds struggle with very different issues, and knowing correct demographics can help tackle these specific issues. As the president of IWPR Heidi Hartmann tells Citylab: “We need to understand that diversity is a nuanced concept, with tremendous variation, so that we can target policy solutions and make sure no group slips through the cracks.

Take a look at these mapped statistics, presented by the IWPR report.
