It’s November; time for a new theme! This month, we’ll be looking at tradition and progress. Many cultures keep up traditions that are widely regarded – by outsiders – to have no place in the 21st Century. Should those traditions be allowed to continue? Is there such a thing as an international moral code, which traditions should be measured against? Or does every culture have the right to maintain their customs?
More specifically, we’ll discuss a few traditions which have come under international scrutiny and condemnation, usually because they’re related to animal cruelty. We’re thinking of bullfighting in Hispanic culture, or whaling, practiced by some Nordic countries and Japan.
